Anger and Dreams
Bo Hernandez 11/5/13
My name is Jake; I’m 15 and live in a town in Texas. I live with my dad, my mom, and my older brother Tyler. I hate my older brother; he is 18, an all American in football, and wants to get first place in State for wrestling. While I’m just a loser. I get in a lot of fights and really don’t care about anything.
So one day I’m just walking in the halls and this kid and his crew ran into me. I didn’t like it at all, so I did the smart thing, I punched him in his face. All of his boys came at me and I beat the crap out of all of them. I broke one guy’s nose busted two guys lips, and just for fun I hit them all in the nuts. Our gym coach, coach boom grabbed me by my leather jacket and took me in his office. He started yelling and yelling. Then he said something that shocked me. He said “I should have you kicked out of school, but I won’t if you join the wrestling team.” He was saying if I don’t do it he’ll have me expelled. My dad would kill me, so I said yes.
I go after school and everyone was saying, “Tyler it’s your little bro.” The first guy I wrestled was the captain, Jerry. He tried taking me down, but I reversed it, and took him down. No one could believe I did that! Coach was really impressed and put me on Varsity at 152, which was my brother’s weight class. My brother was so mad at me. He was on wrestling all 4 years and this was the year he was going to State, but I didn’t care, he’d get over it. The season was passing by and I was winning matches, and it looked like I was going to State. Since I took my brothers Varsity spot, he went to the Park District to wrestle and he was going to State, too. I couldn’t believe that he and I might have to wrestle each other.
So the day comes when we get on the bus to go to State. We get there, and there are kids from all over the State. It was crazy! The tournament starts and I’m actually having trouble, but I’m still beating kids. My brother was winning as well. The finalists go on the screen, and sure enough, it’s me and my brother wrestling at State!
It started. Me and my brother squared up, and by the end of the first period it was pretty even. I took him down and he took me down. In the second period we both were gassed. I was surprised we could even walk. Coach was talking to me before the third period, but I wasn’t listening. I was too busy thinking about my brother. He’s been doing this since freshman year, working hard to get where he is. I could beat him and ruin his life by taking away the scholarships. I really thought about it because I really hated him for the treated me in the past. Before Coach told me to go on the mat, I made my decision. I knew what I had to do. The ref told us to shake hands. Then I did the smart thing and punched him in the face and kneed him in the nuts. I was disqualified and my brother won State. We both won that day, Tyler won his dream, and I got all the anger out, which is a win to me. My brother got scholarships everywhere. I wasn’t going to join wrestling my last 2 years of high school but my brother wanted me to. So I did and I ended up winning State two years in a row.
