That ending really sucked. Why not give the man what he wanted? He worked that hard just to lose it all. Who can blame him for wanting the best? The way the author explained his death was heartless. Instead of killing him they could have made him sick for months. The ending was cruel.
Many people today are greedy just like Pahom. If I had the opportunity to do something like Pahom did I would’ve taken the chance. Take Wesley Snipes for instance. He has made millions of dollars over the years of his career. He was convicted for tax evasion and is now serving three years in jail. The love of money is the root of all evil.
The deaf of Pahom was bogus. The author didn’t linger on Pahom’s death. The author didn’t even give Pahom a funeral or anything. Obviously the author didn’t agree with Pahom and his beliefs. The author Tolstoy condemned ownership, capitalism, the Orthodox Church, and the Russia’s czarist government. Pahom’s love of ownership was one of Tolstoy’s dislikes. Pahom wanted to own more and more land and that’s why Tolstoy ended the story the way he did.
The ending didn’t fit the character. The character should have been a bad character in order to fit the ending. Pahom didn’t deserve that. If a person worked hard they should be able to live and see the things they have accomplished. Many people have been in Pahom’s situation over the years. Look at Starkiesha Reed; she was an honors student and ended up dying before her first military ball. What did she do so bad to deserve that ending? All she was doing was getting the best for her self.
